NI LE CIEL NI LA TERRE (Neither Heaven nor earth) by Clément Cogitore

Writers: Clément Cogitore (scenario), Thomas Bide- gain (collaboration)
Stars: Jérémie Renier, Swann Arlaud, Marc Robert
France, 2014, 1h40, Fiction, English subtitles
The movie narrates the story of the mystery disappearance of four members of a french army platoon settled in Afghanistan. Even though the characters end up figuring out in what conditions those disappearances occur, the reasons of it remains totally unknown. The viewers are invited to make their own explanation regarding these reasons. The actors are brilliant, every details in the scenario and the picture make it look extremely real, and yet doesn’t fall into a false documentary genre. We’re immersed to the point we feel like we’re simply living it.

LES DEUX AMIS (The two friends) by Louis Garrel

Writers: Louis Garrel & Christophe Honoré
Stars: Golshifteh Farahani, Vincent Macaigne, Louis Garrel
France, 2015, 1h40, Fiction, English subtitles
You have here a sort of JULES ET JIM scheme where two male friends fall in love for a young woman who is also a probation inmate. A female who is unable to get back to her cell in prison because of the two guys’ behaviour. This movie is a study of the friend- ship mechanism, at least among men. It explains how it works in certain situations, how it sometimes turns out. It shows how strong or how weak, fragile, it may finally be. Louis Garrel gives here a tremen- dous double performance as the lead character and the director.

LES CHEVALIERS BLANCS (The White Knights) by Joachim Lafosse

Stars: Vincent Lindon, Louise Bourgoin, Valérie Donzelli, Reda Kateb, Bintou Rimtobaye, Jean-Henri Compère, Philippe Rebbot, Yannick Renier
Belgique, 2015, 1h52min, Drame, English subtitles
At the head of his NGO Move For Kids, Jacques Arnault pulls some humanitarian workers in a country of Africa "to take in" orphan children. The operation is transformed in a panic.
Inspired from actual events that occurred eight years ago, this is a very unusual story. The tale of a No Government Organization - and also a non authorized one - who took orphans from their lost villages in the deep sub Sahara Africa. They took those orphans - or supposed to be - in order to bring them to France, in a total illegal way, so that those under five kids can find foster families. So, there is a really ambivalent atmosphere and characters too. Vincent Lindon gives here, one more time, a terrific performance as the leader of this surprising group, that fits him very well. Only him could have do this, or maybe Olivier Gourmet... We can consider this as an adventure film, so rare in the French industry since the fifties or early sixties. Watch out for the ending...

And later he meets the girl’s sister, falls for her too, marries her and finally finds out the whole truth. And the audience is glued only because of this. All the characters here give outstanding performances. Benoit Poelvoerde, Chiara Mastroianni, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Cathy Deneuve, every one here. A drama that slowly brings you to the thriller, but without any criminal scheme.
Terrific. The best of the both Benoit Jacquot and Poelvoerde.
